Just as you regularly cleanse your physical body, so should you regularly cleanse your spiritual body.
What is "Spiritual Cleansing"?
When you’re sweaty and grimy after a long day, you take a shower and clean yourself off, right?
Well, in the same vein, it’s important to regularly bathe your spiritual body of all the energetic sweat and grime you pick up on. This kind of cleansing is vital in maintaining a strong and clean energetic field.
See, in our day-to-day lives, we tend to pick up on a lot—other people's emotions, negative energies, energetic attachments, and so much more. Even if we don't fully realize we're doing it, our energetic fields (if not properly tended to) often pick up some intensely heavy energy.
And what's a witch to do with all that draining energy except clear it out!
Using sound, smoke, water, and more, you can keep your spiritual body clean and clear of any dense and heavy energies.
It's not just good practice, but good hygiene.
When Should You Cleanse Yourself?
While regular maintenance is best, how regularly you decide to spiritually cleanse is entirely up to you. Energetically sensitive types may find they need to cleanse more often (weekly, or even daily), but most people fair well doing it on a monthly or as-needed basis (ex. when you're feeling heavy or dense).
Many witches, spiritualists, and mystics will even engage in spiritual cleansing practices right before a ritual or ceremony—believing these practices will elevate their energetic work into the highest, clearest, and most potent place possible.
It's also highly recommended that after any chaotic, stressful, or traumatic time, to cleanse yourself from any energies that may have been picked up. We tend to be especially vulnerable during demanding events, and spiritual cleansing can help ease any weight or undue suffering these situations may have exposed you to.
Top Spiritual Cleansing Methods:
While there are hundreds of spiritual cleansing methods out there, there are a few standard practices that many modern mystics call upon.
To start you on your spiritual cleansing journey, here are a list of the top spiritual cleansing practices of the modern age:
Bath— calling on the spirit of water and the spirit of earth, cleansing baths are a potent and powerful remedy. Use salts, oils, and clays to aide you in this practice. It’s best to rely on your intuition as far as recipes go, but here’s one to get you started:
1 c. salt (Epsom or sea salt)
2 tbsp. baking soda
9 drops essential oil (lavender, chamomile, or diluted tree blends are best)
Cleansing Herbs— calling on the spirit of fire and air, smudging is a beautiful and simple practice to help clear, cleanse, and restore balance in the spiritual body. Light a bundle of sage, palo santo, or cedar and gently brush the smoke around your body—making sure to get the top of your head and the bottoms of your feet. TIP: it’s best to state your intention beforehand (ex. I ask that all dense energies be cleared from my body), and to chant your intention during the smudge as well.
Sound— calling on the spirit of air, sound is a powerful tool that utilizes frequency that has been shown to not only harmonize your spiritual body but your physical body as well! For this practice, it’s best to get yourself into a centered and meditative state (either sitting or lying down). Using a sound bowl, or high-frequency tones (you can easily find these online—look up 528hz or 432hz to start), play the sound and allow the vibration to echo throughout your entire body.
Spiritual cleansing is an important tool in any witch’s self-care toolkit.
Whether you’re working with heavy amounts of energy, going through a rough time, or you easily pick up on the energies in your environment, it’s smart to have an established spiritual cleansing practice to help clear, cleanse, and ground your energy back into balance.
Our hope is that with the information above, you can begin to cultivate your very own spiritual cleansing practice!
